Do I Need a Website?
Published:
Why I built my website, what a website is really for, and why not every business needs one.
Quick answer
Not every business needs a website. But a simple, clear website can help people understand what you do, build trust, and make it easier for them to contact you.
Why I built a website
I did not build my website just to make money.
I built it to attract the right people and to explain what I actually do in a way that makes sense.
Over time, I realised something important. Not everyone needs a website, and many people who already have one are not really using it properly.
Do you really need one?
That depends on the type of work you do and where your customers come from.
A lot of small businesses still get most of their work through word of mouth, repeat customers, and local reputation. In that situation, a website may not be the thing that transforms the business overnight.
That is why I think it is a fair question to ask.
Do I really need a website?
When you may not need a website
In some cases, you may not need one at all, or at least not a complicated one.
If you are already fully booked, getting regular work, and people know exactly how to reach you, a website may not change much.
That is worth saying, because too many people are pushed towards websites as though every business must have one or risk disappearing.
I do not think that is true.
When a website does matter
Where a website becomes useful is when people want to check you out before they contact you.
A website helps when you want to:
- show people who you are
- explain clearly what you do
- look more established and trustworthy
- give people confidence to contact you
- be found by people outside your immediate circle
It does not have to be big. It does not need to be clever. It just needs to do its job.
What people often get wrong
One of the biggest misunderstandings is that people think a website is something that makes money on its own.
It is not.
A website is a reference point. It is a place to explain. It is a place to build trust.
If someone hears your name, gets given your details, or finds you online, your website helps answer the next question in their mind:
Who is this person, and do they look genuine?
What my website is for
For me, my website is simple.
It shows who I am, what I can do, and how I can help.
It gives people somewhere to look, somewhere to learn a bit more, and somewhere to contact me when the time is right.
That is enough.
No hype. No false promises. Just something clear, practical, and useful.
Final thoughts
So, do you need a website?
Not always.
But if you want a simple way to explain what you do, build trust, and make it easier for people to contact you, then yes, a website can be a very useful tool.
The important thing is not having a website just because everyone says you should.
The important thing is understanding what you want it to do.
